We are the Bird family. Mitch and I have been married for 10 years! Brielle is our oldest. She is 8 years old and is a total girly girl!
We used to live a very typical life. One of routine and comfort. But 4 years ago our entire world stopped in a tiny hospital room. We truly couldn’t believe that this was real life.
Our daughter Brielle was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is a fast spreading cancer that starts in the nerve tissue. For Brielle, it developed in her abdomen; we found 1 large tumor and 2 small masses, and cancer taking over her bone marrow.
We completed 6 rounds of chemo treatments, 2 bone marrow transplants, 12 rounds of radiation, 6 rounds of immunotherapy, and weeks of at home meds. We rang the bell after 2 years of treatment, and felt like we were finally “free”.

Brielle was considered cancer free for 20 months, and unfortunately on January 17th, 2024, we found out that she had relapsed. Her cancer is back, and it has spread everywhere, including spots that were not there before. Relapse treatment is unfortunately unknown. It’s all a guessing game, the statistics aren’t great, but our God is. We just hope she responds to something!

Disseminated histoplasmosis can cause brain tumors and cancers like neurofibrosarcoma. Immunocompetent people can get it, but almost all doctors mistakenly think they can't.
