As some of you already know, our beloved Trish was diagnosed a little over a month ago with Stage 1 squamous cell cancer of the esophagus. This has been a difficult and unexpected season for our family, but through it all, we have seen God’s faithfulness.
Next Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.,Trish (Piri/Paty) will undergo a major surgery called an esophagectomy. This is a very serious and extensive surgery that is expected to take 5–6 hours, if not longer, and will be performed by two surgeons working together.
During the surgery, Dr. Oxner will reformat Trish's stomach into the shape of a tube. He will also place a feeding tube to her intestine. Then Dr. Gaudet will enter through her side, remove the portion of Trish's esophagus where the cancer is located and connect it to the reformatted stomach, which will now be up into her chest. It is a major change to her anatomy, and her body will need significant time to adjust and heal.
Her recovery will be long and difficult. She is expected to spend approximately two weeks in the hospital, and when she is released, she will still have a feeding tube while her body continues to heal. Once she is fully recovered, the way Trish eats and drinks will be different for the rest of her life. She will have to learn how to eat differently and adjust to the changes this surgery will bring. We know this will be a significant adjustment, both physically and emotionally.
We also won't know whether Trish will need chemotherapy until after the surgery. The doctors will be able to learn more once they remove the cancer and examine everything more closely. For now, our focus is on getting her safely through surgery and giving her body the opportunity to heal.
One of the greatest answers to prayer came when we learned that the cancer is only Stage 1. Her doctors had prepared us for the possibility that the cancer may have already spread beyond the esophagus. We were bracing ourselves for much harder news, so hearing that it appears to be contained and at Stage 1 was an incredible gift.
Through all of this, Trish has remained steadfast in her faith. She is trusting the Lord completely and believes with all her heart that He is in control. Her strength doesn't come from knowing exactly what the future holds, but from knowing the One who does. Even in the uncertainty, she has continued to put her trust in Him, and that has been such a beautiful testimony to everyone who loves her.
The surgery and recovery will be a lot for her body and for our family. There will be difficult days, and we know this road will require patience, strength, and a lot of grace. But we are going into next Wednesday with hope. We are praying for a successful surgery, that all of the cancer will be removed, that there will be no complications, and that God will give Trish strength and healing in the weeks and months ahead.
Her sister, Laura, will be coming from Peru to stay with Trish and Bo once Trish is released from the hospital. Laura will help care for Trish and support both of them as they navigate those first weeks at home. With Trish still receiving nutrition through her feeding tube and needing so much care and attention, having Laura there will be such a blessing.
When Trish comes home, we will also set up a meal train for Laura and Bo. Having meals taken care of will be a tremendous help to them as they focus their time and energy on caring for Trish and helping her through this next stage of recovery.
We created this page so that we can keep everyone who loves Trish updated throughout her surgery, hospital stay, and recovery. We know how many people are praying for her and wanting to know how she is doing, and we are so grateful for that love and support.
More than anything, we ask that you continue to pray. Pray for the two surgeons, Dr. Oxner and Dr. Gaudet, who will be operating on Trish, for wisdom and steady hands, for a successful surgery, for protection from complications, and for strength as she begins the long recovery ahead. Pray that the cancer will be completely removed and that she will not need further treatment. And pray that through every difficult moment, Trish will continue to feel the Lord's presence and peace.
We are so grateful for each person who has prayed for Trish, checked in on her, encouraged her, or simply kept her in your thoughts. We feel incredibly blessed to have so many people walking alongside us through this.
We don't know exactly what the coming weeks will look like, but we know Who goes before us. We know that God has been faithful to Trish and our family already, and we are trusting Him with everything that comes next.

Como algunos de ustedes ya saben, a nuestra querida Trish le diagnosticaron hace poco más de un mes cáncer de células escamosas del esófago en etapa 1. Esta ha sido una etapa difícil e inesperada para nuestra familia, pero a través de todo esto hemos podido ver la fidelidad de Dios.
El próximo miércoles a las 7:30 a. m., Trish (Piri/Paty) se someterá a una cirugía mayor llamada esofagectomía. Es una cirugía muy seria y extensa que se espera que dure entre 5 y 6 horas, o incluso más, y será realizada por dos cirujanos que trabajarán juntos.
Durante la cirugía, el Dr. Oxner modificará el estómago de Trish, dándole la forma de un tubo. También colocará una sonda de alimentación que llegará hasta su intestino. It would be such a blessing to have each slot filled and lift this burden from Laura and Bo as they care for Trish around the clock. Laura has some dietary restrictions. She is gluten free, dairy free and can’t tolerate beans. Bo on the other hand can eat anything and everything and he especially loves desserts! Meals can be dropped off at 6pm.
