Hello family and friends,
Last weekend began with so much joy when we brought home Stella’s biological brother, Bosco, reuniting them for the first time since they were puppies. But shortly after, our world was turned upside down.
What started as subtle signs of pain quickly escalated into a severe medical crisis within 24 hours: Stella lost mobility in her legs and went into sudden respiratory distress. We rushed her to the ICU, where diagnostics revealed massive spinal trauma—a ruptured disc at C3 causing severe pressure and extensive spinal bruising (C2–C5).
Stella underwent emergency spinal surgery, but her recovery has presented major challenges. Due to respiratory complications, she required a ventilator and a temporary tracheostomy to help her breathe while weaning off heavy sedation.
Where Stella Stands Today: Our 2.5-year-old girl is a true fighter. She has spent the past week in the veterinary ICU receiving round-the-clock intensive care. She is alert, charming the entire medical team (who even set up cartoons on an iPad for her), and showed us huge smiles when we visited her with her favorite "hedgie" toy. While she is making small steps forward—like responding to sensation in her paws—she still has a long road ahead before she can breathe fully on her own and begin physical rehabilitation.
Between emergency surgery, specialized ICU life support, and ongoing care, the medical costs are estimated at $20,000.
