A Miracle for Mav
Meet Maverick (Mav) Blue, an amazing 7-year-old who continues to show incredible courage, determination, and joy as he navigates life with a rare SPTAN1 gene mutation.
For the past seven years, Maverick’s family has prayed for opportunities that could help him make meaningful progress and gain greater independence. Today, they feel like some of those prayers may finally be answered through intensive therapy and an incredible new treatment opportunity.
Maverick’s genetic condition has affected his brain development and resulted in a global developmental delay. He uses a wheelchair most of the time, but he continues to surprise everyone with what he can do. He has worked hard to learn how to crawl independently, and although he is nonverbal, he is making progress in finding new ways to communicate and even developing verbal communication skills.
Maverick participates in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, but his family knows that continued intensive therapy is an important part of helping him build on the progress he has already made.
They are hoping to get Maverick to NAPA Center for intensive therapy approximately once each quarter starting next month. While insurance is expected to provide coverage for a portion of these services, not all of the costs associated with his intensive therapies will be covered. His family will continue to be responsible for remaining out-of-pocket expenses while trying to give Maverick every opportunity to continue progressing.
They are also exploring a promising individualized treatment called an antisense oligonucleotide, or ASO, through the n-Lorem Foundation. An ASO is a specialized genetic medicine designed to target the effects of a specific genetic mutation. After seven years of hoping and praying for a treatment that could address the underlying cause of Maverick’s challenges, the possibility of an individualized therapy like this feels nothing short of a miracle.
Because this type of treatment is highly individualized, the process can be complex and costly, with expenses potentially reaching $100,000.
Maverick has already shown us that he is capable of so much. His family is doing everything they can to give him access to therapies and treatment that could help him continue to grow, communicate, move, and become more independent.
