Help Me Take Back My Quality of Life
For those of you who may not know me well, I’m a 47-year-old hardworking, passionate health care professional, wife, sister, daughter, genuine friend, and caregiver.
Every day, I have the privilege of helping people living with disabilities and complex medical conditions. I provide services that help improve the quality of life for individuals living with Spinal Cord Injuries, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, Cerebral Palsy, Chiari Malformation, Tethered Cord Syndrome, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, arthritis, and many other conditions.
At home, I am also a caregiver for someone living with a Spinal Cord Injury & a Traumatic Brain Injury.
I have spent much of my life caring for others, advocating for others, and helping others find a better quality of life.
Now, I need help finding that same hope for myself.
I have lived my entire life with Chiari Malformation I and have recently been diagnosed with an additional condition Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome, along with underlying co-morbidities. Unfortunately, there is no cure for these conditions, and over time, my symptoms and limitations have progressed to the point where my quality of life has been greatly diminished.
After extensive research and consideration, I am planning to travel to Barcelona, Spain, in the spring of 2027 for a specialized surgical procedure intended to help slow or stop the progression of my condition.
Why Spain?
The surgical approach available to me in Spain is minimally invasive compared with the standard procedure typically offered in the United States. The U.S. procedure is significantly more invasive, involves a longer recovery, and, based on the information and medical opinions I have received, may have a lower likelihood of providing the outcome I am hoping for while carrying the possibility of requiring additional surgery.
The procedure in Spain offers me another option—one that I believe gives me the best opportunity to preserve my function and quality of life while avoiding a more extensive procedure.
But getting there comes with a significant financial burden.
I am hoping to raise approximately $40,000 USD (€35,000) to cover the costs associated with this journey, including:
- Surgery and hospital stay
- Medications and surgical dressings
- Travel to and from Barcelona/Lodging and meals for myself and a caregiver
- Post-surgical care and recovery expenses
- Lost income during treatment and recovery
This isn't an easy request for me to make.
I am accustomed to being the person who helps others—to working hard, showing up, and finding a way forward. Asking for help can feel incredibly vulnerable, but I have reached a point where I know I cannot do this alone.
I am not asking for help because I have given up. I am asking because I am determined to keep going.
I want the opportunity to reclaim as much of my quality of life as possible. I want to continue doing the work I love. I want to continue being there for the people who depend on me. And I want to have the chance to live my life with less pain, fewer limitations, and more hope for the future.
