In Support of The Schmidt Family

The Schmidt Family
Hello, dear family and friends.

Our Story

Our family’s story has never been one we would have chosen, but it has become one where we’ve witnessed God’s faithfulness in the darkest places.

It began long before we knew the words hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Looking back, we now understand that this genetic heart disease had been woven through our family’s story all along. After our son Hudson suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in December 2022, genetic testing revealed the diagnosis that would change all of our lives. Not only was Hudson diagnosed, but our daughter Hannah and their dad, Allen, were too.

Just weeks later, in January 2023, Hannah’s heart had deteriorated to the point that she was listed for a heart transplant. What followed were nine of the hardest months of our lives. We lived inside the hospital, celebrating birthdays, holidays, and milestones from a hospital room while waiting for the call that would save her life. Through three cardiac arrests, countless procedures, tears, and prayers, we watched God sustain us one day at a time.

On October 22, 2024, Hannah received her miracle heart.

It was the answer to thousands of prayers and the beginning of a brand-new chapter. Today she is thriving because of the incredible gift of organ donation, and every heartbeat is a reminder of God’s goodness and another family’s unimaginable sacrifice.

While we celebrated Hannah’s new life, we knew our journey wasn’t over.

Hudson had survived his own cardiac arrest years earlier, undergone an extensive septal myectomy, and received an implanted defibrillator. We prayed those interventions would give him many more years. Instead, despite every treatment available, his heart continued to weaken.

At the same time, Allen was beginning to face the reality of his own diagnosis. Living with the same genetic heart disease as our children, he has also begun struggling with symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. As he navigates ongoing testing, specialist appointments, and difficult decisions about what the future may hold for his own heart, our family is learning that this disease hasn’t just affected one child—it has impacted all of us. While we’re fighting for Hudson and celebrating Hannah’s second chance at life, we’re also walking through the uncertainty of Allen’s own heart journey.

As if the weight of heart disease wasn’t enough, another blow came.

In July 2026, Allen unexpectedly lost his job. Along with the emotional weight of everything our family was already carrying, we suddenly faced uncertainty surrounding income, health insurance, and how we would continue caring for a family whose lives revolve around complex medical care.

Just weeks later, in August 2026, the news we had been praying we would never hear became reality: Hudson was officially listed for a heart transplant.

Today we live in the space between heartbreak and hope.

We are waiting for the phone call that could save our son’s life while doing everything we can to keep him stable at home. Our days are filled with medications, appointments, labs, hospital visits, and the constant unknown that comes with advanced heart failure. We have experienced the miracle of transplantation once, and now we find ourselves asking God for another.

We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but we know Who holds tomorrow.

If you’ve found your way here, we ask for two things above all else.

Please pray.

Pray for Hudson’s strength and protection as we wait. Pray for wisdom for his medical team. Pray for peace and endurance for our family. Pray for Allen as he navigates his own heart journey. And pray for the precious donor family we don’t yet know, who one day may make the most selfless gift imaginable.

If you feel led to support our family financially, every gift helps ease the burden of travel, medical expenses, lost income, and the many unexpected costs that come with caring for a family affected by life-threatening heart disease.

Most of all, thank you for walking this journey with us. Every prayer, every share, every encouraging message, and every act of kindness reminds us that we are not walking this road alone.

We have seen God move mountains before. We have witnessed one miracle. And we are trusting and believing for another one.

In this time of need, we invite you to support us in different ways. Your kindness and generosity will help us immensely:
  1. Choose from Support Registry options – monetary gifts and gift cards are welcome.
  2. 'Share' to Spread the Word to family and friends.
  3. 'Follow' Updates to stay informed about Hudson's journey.
