Jackson Kent Dewitt, known to those closest to him as “Jax,” is much more than the challenges he’s currently facing. At 16 years old, Jax has always had a way of lighting up a room with his heart-melting dimples and his infectious smile. Sadly, Jax is facing some of the hardest challenges of his young life. Due to a significant worsening of his health, combined with two separate viral illnesses this January, he is now on hospice care. As of now, Jax is being cared for at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Many of you may know his mom, Jennifer, from her advocacy work with families with complex medical needs. She’s been a lifeline for so many in the community, offering advice, support, and a listening ear. Now, it’s our chance to return some of that love and care to her family.
Jennifer is a strong, intelligent, and incredibly determined woman, currently working toward becoming a Registered Nurse. Just one week before Jax’s recent hospital stay, she switched jobs and completed orientation to start a new role as an SR Tech in the CVICU at a local hospital. She was excited to begin, but those plans have been put on hold as she now provides around-the-clock, intensive care for Jax. His condition requires constant monitoring and respiratory support, leaving Jennifer with little to no time for herself. She is often awake at all hours, only able to sleep for brief periods—if at all—as his needs demand her full attention every moment. This overwhelming responsibility has made it impossible for her to continue working or focus on anything outside of Jax’s care.
Jennifer has been hesitant to ask for or accept help, but with multiple hospital stays, Jax's declining health, and the overwhelming responsibility of caring for her family, she has finally agreed to allow me to create this page. The weight of these challenges is immense. Now, more than ever, they need the support of their community.
How Your Support Helps
Any donations or support given will go directly to help offset essential costs, including travel and meals for hospital visits, covering bills due to Jennifer’s inability to work, and sadly, funeral expenses as Jax is on hospice care.
If possible, Jennifer also hopes to use some of the funds for a few special items or experiences on a “bucket list” she has created for Jax, so they can make the most of the time they have together.
Important Health Considerations
Jennifer is deeply grateful for the support of her community, but as they navigate this difficult time, she kindly asks that you do not visit or drop off items IF you have been around anyone who is sick—even with what might seem like mild allergies. In this season, it’s often hard to tell the difference between a cold, the flu, or seasonal allergies. If you are well, Jennifer asks that you please wear a mask around Jax for his safety.
In terms of meals, Jennifer has asked for gift cards instead of homemade meals. Her other two kids are very picky eaters, and gift cards will make it easier for her (or others helping) to grab food on the go. Given Jax's health instability, it’s often unpredictable where half the family will be, making takeout or quick meals a more practical option.
A Heartfelt Thank You & Community Connection
In moments like this, we’re reminded of the incredible strength of community. Jennifer has always been there for others, and now it’s our turn to show up for her family. Whether it’s a simple message of support, helping out with the house/family, or contributing to the fund, every bit helps ease the burden on this amazing family.
It’s hard to put into words what this family is going through, but if you can, please donate, share, or simply send a kind message. Every little bit of love and support counts.
