Help Lizzie Keep Moving Forward
Meet Lizzie Leist, a sweet and incredibly determined 3 year old who has already overcome so much.
Lizzie was born with a rare blood disorder that caused damage to her brain, leaving her with quadriplegic dystonic cerebral palsy. Her journey has been filled with unexpected twists and turns, but through it all, Lizzie continues to be an absolute trooper. She works incredibly hard every day, and her family is determined to give her every opportunity to grow, move, communicate, and become as independent as possible.
Lizzie currently participates in multiple therapies each week, but her family is now pursuing intensive therapies that can give her even more focused support. They are also working to obtain specialized supportive equipment to help Lizzie better interact with the people and world around her.
One of the next steps in Lizzie's journey is DMI (Dynamic Movement Intervention) therapy at All Kids Are Perfect in North Carolina. This intensive therapy focuses on movement, strength, motor skills, and functional independence. The family hopes this opportunity will help Lizzie continue making progress toward greater mobility and independence. Each intensive is approximately $10,000, including therapy, lodging, and travel.
The family is also pursuing stem cell treatment with Neurogana in Mexico, which they hope may support Lizzie's ongoing neurological recovery. Stem cell therapies are being studied for their potential to support repair and recovery after brain injuries, although they are still an emerging treatment and results are not guaranteed. The estimated cost is $15,000 per treatment, before travel expenses.
Unfortunately, these intensive therapies and much of the supportive equipment Lizzie needs are not covered by insurance, leaving her family to cover these costs out of pocket.
