Our sweet Emersyn Juliette Koehn was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2024 at five years old. Severe shoulder pain, which left Emmy unable to move her arm, prompted a visit to immediate care. After an X-ray came back clear but the symptoms did not improve, a blood draw at the pediatrician's revealed concerning blood counts. Emmy was subsequently brought to the ER at Lake Forest Hospital and then transferred to the Pediatric Oncology/Hematology unit at Lutheran General in Park Ridge, where a bone marrow sample confirmed her family’s worst fear: a pediatric cancer diagnosis.
While Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia has positive outcomes for most children, Emmy has a long road and hard fight ahead. In just three weeks' time, she has already completed numerous rounds of chemotherapy: infused through a port in her chest, injected into her spinal fluid, and taken orally. She’s endured several bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, MRIs, a blood transfusion due to low blood counts, and multiple procedures under anesthesia. And this is just the start of this journey for Emmy, who has 2.5 years of treatment and chemotherapy ahead.
Emmy is a big sister to Brooklyn, the eldest cousin of many (a job she takes very seriously), a precious daughter to Nate and Melissa, a beloved granddaughter, and the sweetest friend to her peers. She’s our baby-doll-loving, Taylor-Swift-singing, dancing queen - with the brightest blue eyes and the sweetest smile you’ve ever seen! We are anxious for Emmy to overcome this unimaginable hurdle, and we can’t wait to see where her curious nature and loving spirit take her in life. We have no doubt her future is bright! As Emmy battles this disease in the years ahead, the rigorous treatment will undoubtedly pose significant scheduling, financial, and emotional challenges for the Koehn family. If you’re interested in offering them support, there are a number of ways to do so via this site. We will also post updates on Emmy’s treatment and progress. Thank you for being here.
