Hello, family and friends!
We are The Sheltons, and we could really use your help!
Our son, Wade, has a very rare genetic condition called Marinesco-Sjögren Syndrome (MSS) — there are only 100–200 confirmed cases in the world. This condition affects his fine and gross motor skills. Wade experiences hypotonia, ataxia, esotropia, and developmental delays.
He works hard every day with physical, occupational, and speech therapies. In October, we are traveling to Austin, Texas for a 3-week intensive therapy session at the NAPA Center. During this intensive, Wade will be working long days with:
- 1 hour of speech services
- 1 hour of occupational therapy
- 1 hour of physical therapy
- 1 hour of Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) therapy
While there, we will be staying in a nearby Airbnb so Wade can rest between sessions and to minimize travel with a newborn. Wade uses a wheelchair provided by insurance and is currently learning to use a gait trainer, which is on loan.
Wade is full of determination and gets stronger every day. While there is no cure for MSS, treatment can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Wade will always face challenges, but with your support, he can continue his journey toward more independence.
Your support will go toward:
- This therapy session at NAPA and Travel
- Future therapy sessions and/or mobility equipment, if additional funds are available
Costs include:
- NAPA intensives: $2,500–$9,000 (typical uncovered insurance cost, with Wade needing 2–3 per year)
- Gait trainer: $5,000–$7,000 (not covered by insurance)
