On April 2nd, at 11:24am, at 28 weeks, beautiful Benson Brian Smith was stillborn.
On Tuesday night, after not feeling his usual movements and kicks, Sheridan and Kaden suspected the worst. Still, they prayed for a miracle and hoped will all their hearts that they were wrong.
They rushed to the hospital and it became the worst night of their lives, followed by the worst nightmare of days. There was no heartbeat. Just 3 days prior his heart rate was so strong, he was measuring right on time, growing perfectly. In an instant, all of their hopes and dreams were shattered.
Sheridan was induced quickly, labor was painful and slow, delivery was quick, and the silence was loud. Nothing could have prepared them or what it would feel like to hold their son, knowing he was gone. They could tell instantly that he resembled his big brother Russell in so many ways-his lips, his nose, hands and feet, his long torso. They held him as long as they could, just wishing they could bring him home to meet his brother, who has been the most excited of them all. He is still struggling to understand, although none of us ever will.
This summer will not be what they have been expecting or looking forward to. Instead it will be filled with what should have beens.
This loss also comes just months after the Smith family tragically and suddenly lost their family dog, Enzo. They have been through so much and we want to help their family in whatever ways we can.
Please consider donating or signing up to deliver a meal or help in another way. These small acts will add up and be able to help lift some of these temporary burdens as they navigate the future without their sweet Benson.
