Dear friends and family,

We are reaching out personally to our circle to ask for help following a devastating tragedy affecting a friend of ours and former schoolmate from Tibetan Children’s Village School, Gopalpur.

She was born in Timure Village, Sedang in Tibetan, which is located in Nepal’s Rasuwa District near the Nepal-Tibet border. After graduating from TCV Gopalpur, she returned to Timure and lived there with her family.

When we contacted her after hearing the news of the flooding, we were devastated to learn that she had escaped only two minutes before the massive flood struck. To describe the scale of the tragedy, she told us, “If there were 100 people, only about 30 made it out.” She also shared the heartbreaking news that many young children had lost their parents. Her entire village and several nearby communities have been swept away by the flood.

She is now temporarily sheltering in Kathmandu alongside approximately 300 other displaced people, most of them children. When we first offered to raise money for her family, her thoughts immediately turned to others. She was most concerned about the children who had lost their parents and the many families who had lost everything. Her selflessness, which is so familiar to those who knew her at TCV Gopalpur moved us to organize this urgent 48-hour fundraiser and help in the most direct and meaningful way we could.

This is a personal, grassroots fundraising effort. We remain in direct contact with her and will coordinate with her to transfer the funds so they can be used and distributed according to the most urgent needs on the ground. We will share updates about the transfer and use of the funds as information becomes available.

Please donate whatever you can and share this with trusted family members, friends, and communities.

This fundraiser will remain open for exactly 48 hours- from 9:00 p.m. ET on Friday, August 28, through 9:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30.
