Around April/May Matthew woke up with neck pain, thinking he had just slept on it wrong. Over the summer months the pain gradually increased, and eventually he started feeling tingling in his hands. He visited his doctor who prescribed basic pain medication and ordered physical therapy. After two and half weeks of physical therapy, the pain was not improving and the tingling continued, with his hands slowly becoming more weak.
Matthew and Rachel got engaged on August 15th, celebrating a happy weekend together up north. The week following, Matthew’s pain and discomfort continued and the tingling and numbness rapidly traveled to his feet and lower legs, making it extremely difficult to walk without help by that next weekend.
On Sunday August 22nd, Matthew’s numbness in his legs caused him to fall, and his parents coordinated with their friend/doctor who advised Matthew go to the ER.
Matthew was admitted to South Shore in Trenton and received an MRI and other tests, which revealed a mass in his neck, pressing on his spinal cord. He then received a testicular ultrasound discovering a mass in one of his testicles. Matthew was quickly transferred to Beaumont Royal Oak and set up with a cancer team to start his treatment plan for Testicular Cancer.
In just one week, Matthew has lost his strength to walk on his own, endured multiple tests and procedures, been diagnosed with testicular cancer, and is beginning chemotherapy. Matthew, Rachel, and his parents, Matt and Rena, are still in shock and trying to process after navigating this unexpected, scary week. They are so grateful to his cancer team at Royal Oak for getting treatment started so quickly, but know this is just the beginning of Matthew’s journey to healing.
For anyone who knows Matthew, you know the kind of caring and loving man that he is. During this week as he’s faced the most terrifying news and intensive medical care, he has constantly been thinking about his and Rachel’s future together.
We wanted to set up this page as a place for family and friends to share support for Matthew’s healing and his future together with Rachel, as well as a place for them to share updates as they come.
The road ahead will not be easy but we are determined to help Matthew get back to his healthy, happy, goofy self. Matthew and Rachel, Matt and Rena, and their families are so grateful for everyone’s support and love during this unimaginable time. 💙
