My spouse, who you may know as ProfMetal (their main online handle), had a terrifying and awful accident on June 24th β shattering their lower leg and damaging their ACL.
It has been an incredibly stressful, overwhelming, expensive situation that could really destroy the little life we're trying our best to build together. We were reaching a point where balance and being financially ok were within reach, again, when this emergency happened. We have a little house we're renting to own and have already been modifying to be more us and love our plans for the future of it... our future. We were actually right in the middle of one of these projects when the accident happened so I've been clearing construction materials out of our 730~ sq ft home while I try to prepare the house to be wheelchair accessible too. I'm also about to start "jobmaxxing"(π€£) while maintaining being available to be their care taker: I'm working on becoming certified to be their at home care taker paid by the state, as we figure out schedules week to week I'll be streaming again, I have an annual gig coming up I'm hoping to get to again because it pays well, I'm keeping my commissions open, and I have a potential morning inventory part time job every other morning with flexibility in my schedule that I may start in the next couple months as well. I may be their disabled wife they primarily take care of and the primary income for, but I am going to get through caring the torch for a while. π
The current timeline of the road to recovery:
- The accident was June 24th
- Surgery #1 was June 25th to add an external fixator to hold everything so it doesn't break more until they are recovered enough for Surgery #2
- The Prof learned bed to walker and walker to chair 1 person aided transfers on June 26th (so impressed!) and we have a system for it since
- They were moved from hospital to skilled nurse facility on June 27th until (hopefully) Surgery #2 or their insurance no longer considers it medically necessary
- [Updated] I have my mandatory home care training at the skilled nursing facility July 6th [Edit: it went well and is in the first Update post too too]
- July 7th was the surgical consultation for Surgery #2 [more info in the Update post - Surgery #2 is scheduled for July 15th]
- Surgery #2 to start reconstruction and its hospital stay
- They may go back to a SNF or they may go out to our friend's more accessible home until I finish preparing our house
- I'm trying to finish making our house accessible by August (I'm trying to get rid of our storage unit by August too)
- Surgery #3 potentially in August, TBD
- Hopefully weight bearing in 4 to 6 months
- Weight bearing for walking not just its own weight about a month after that initial point, which means clearance to start scheduling learning to walk again
- Some months of serious PT
- Maybe walking again Summer 2027? π₯³β¨οΈ
The Prof. and I will be together 14 years in August, married for 2 years come October. π We love each other very much and the last couple years have really tried to keep us down, and we're refusing to stay down but... gosh, it's getting harder to get back up every time. We are SO grateful for the friends and loved ones who are being incredibly supportive of us, who have asked for a helping group chat/friend Discord for figuring things out, and who asked for something like this to be made to.
We're really trying to stay strong, but it's been hard to keep going with these setbacks and now this devastating accident.
