Fiery and the Prof
Hey everybody,
These last few weeks have been some of the longest in our lives and also seem to be flying by when I try to rush through everything the Prof needs. It has constantly surprised me how I've ran out of time to work for the day already and it is time to get back to the Prof again, but I'll get back to that.
The external fixator era (the pic with the bars and extra pieces under wraps) was particularly difficult on the Prof's mental health as well. It bridged the day after the accident until the swelling went down enough to have a surgery to add metal plating and screws to hold the bones together again. Their tibial plateau got rebuilt though and is healing just as expected. The external fixator was supposed to keep their bones from shifting from where they belong while waiting to connect the shattered sections again... but due to a couple incidents the week before the surgery, the bones had shifted anyway and needed to be moved back into place before being rebuilt. It made their whole lower leg and foot hurt more than it otherwise would've. But that was the only complication and everything has been healing well.
They were in a skilled nursing facility from June 27th until July 15th (when they went back to the hospital for surgery) then from July 20th to July 31st. While the nursing facility wasn't very great in a lot of ways, they managed to find community there and make friends we're going to stay in touch with who we intend to visit once Trimet LIFT is set up.
Since July 31st, they've been in my care at our friend's house on the other side of the metro area. I actually am typing this from the bus right now. I've been very fortunate to be able to catch rides a few times from friends coming to/from work and the like, but the rest of the time I'm bussing back and forth on this roughly 50 mile loop. Take care of them, be there overnight in case of anything, make sure they're good for the day, breakfast together, commute home, work on making it so the house is finally ready for them, commute back to them, late dinner, repeat.
I'm hoping to bring them home within the next week though.
It is amazing the progress they've made though. They're transferring to and from bed unaided, in and out of their wheelchair, using the restroom completely independently, getting dressed unaided, cooking with anything within reach, transferring in and out of sedans and SUVs β just really crushing it. Whatever accessibility allows for, they're doing alone for the most part. I'm so proud of them for working so hard.
A friend took them on errands and they were so excited to get out of the house, do their own grocery shopping, just being outside and getting to do things.
I'll try to update more. But it has been hectic for sure haha.
Β Thanks for being here for all of it.
