Vera is four years old — full of grit, spark, and a determination
that far outweighs her tiny frame. She has always had a strong personality. The
kind of little girl who decides she’s going to do something… and then does it. That
stubborn streak? It’s one of her greatest strengths now.
On
June 28, 2025, Vera survived a near drowning.
The following
day, June 29, she coded.
In a matter of moments, her vibrant
childhood collided with a fight for survival. She spent three long weeks in the
PICU, surrounded by monitors, ventilators, and a medical team working around the
clock. Every hour felt uncertain. Every small step forward felt monumental.
After
months of stabilization and intensive care, Vera was finally able to leave the hospital
on October 30th. Walking out of those doors was a miracle — but it marked the beginning
of a new and complex journey.
Because of the oxygen deprivation,
Vera now lives with an anoxic brain injury and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
She has spastic quadriplegia with significant spasticity, dystonia, and dysautonomia.
She experiences gastroparesis and a chronic pediatric feeding disorder and relies
on a GJ tube for nutrition. She has contractures in both Achilles tendons and struggles
with sialorrhea. Her days are filled with therapies, medical equipment, and constant
care.
And still — she fights.
Since
coming home, Vera has already made gains that bring us to tears. Small movements.
Increased awareness. Tiny but powerful signs that her stubborn spirit is still leading
the way. She is working so hard, and we believe there is more in her.
As
we’ve connected with families further along this road, many have shared treatments
they describe as life-changing:
• Stem cell therapy
in Surprise, Arizona — approximately $9,000 with travel
• Hyperbaric
oxygen therapy with Dr. Hart in New Orleans — approximately $18,000 with travel
and a required two-month stay
Neither treatment
is covered by insurance. But when it comes to your child, you search for every possible
opportunity to help them heal.
Right now, our goal is to
get Vera access to these therapies and give her every chance to continue progressing.
Mom
and Dad, Ashley and Dylan, will be sharing updates here as we move forward. Thank
you for walking alongside our family and for believing in Vera’s fight.
