Last week, a significant storm caused severe damage to my grandparents’ home late at night on Tuesday, June 30, 2026. The storm hit with incredible force, causing major roof damage that requires immediate repair.
To make matters even more difficult, my grandpa is currently battling Stage 4 colon cancer and my grandma has a heart condition. Because of their illnesses and my grandpa’s ongoing treatments, they aren’t physically able to help with the cleanup and repairs they now face. My grandparents are retired, living on a fixed income, and unfortunately do not have insurance to cover the damage. The cost of repairs and cleanup will be thousands of dollars, which is far more than they can manage on their own.
The National Weather Service in Duluth reviewed radar data, storm evolution, and drone footage of the damage. Their assessment concluded that the damage was most likely caused by a powerful microburst (a concentrated burst of straight-line winds), rather than a tornado. They estimated wind speeds at my grandparents’ property reached 60–80 mph, which explains the extensive damage to their home. The tornado that later developed near Murphy Lake formed shortly after and east of their location.
