In Support of The A Warf Family

The A Warf Family
An Urgent Update & A Plea for Help Getting Us Home
Last night was a step forward. My husband was transferred from Mayo Clinic to a partner rehabilitation facility to begin Phase 1 of his recovery. We are deeply grateful to the doctors and staff at Mayo—they have been wonderful to us during this incredibly difficult time.
But we are now facing a major hurdle.
We have been living on hold for a month and a half. Our children are doing everything they can to help, each in their own way. Some live in a different state and are caring for “Papa,” who has Alzheimer’s and has developed sundowners syndrome. Others are coordinating people to take care of our house and animals because they don’t live there themselves. The children who live in our state are also dealing with a crisis of their own while still doing their best to support us from afar.
Meanwhile, we are stranded nearly 2,000 miles from home with our vehicle, a young child, and our two dogs.
We desperately need to get home, but we have been told he will not be medically cleared for standard driving after this first phase of rehab.
I have looked at every option:
Flying us home and shipping the vehicle — completely out of reach financially
Flying us home and storing the vehicle to get later — absolutely out of reach financially!
Driving home ourselves — appears to be our only option, but it is medically complicated and risky
Because of his surgery, my husband cannot drive at all. Due to my own medical condition, I can only drive short distances, and attempts to find a volunteer driver have not worked out.
Sitting for long periods also dramatically increases his risk of life-threatening blood clots (DVT). To travel safely we must stop every 90 minutes for him to walk. We are limited to a maximum of 4–5 hours in the vehicle per day.
What is normally a two-day drive will take us a minimum of five days.
This plan is possible, but the cost is the roadblock. He needs a good, supportive bed so he can rest and recover before the next day of travel. Five nights in hotels plus extended road expenses are simply beyond what we can afford right now.
We are exhausted and just want to bring our family back together.
If you are able to help cover the cost of these hotel stays and travel expenses—or if you have any other ideas or resources that could help get us home—we would be forever grateful. We need help, and we need it soon.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading, sharing, and keeping our family in your prayers.
