Last night, my nephew smelled smoke and alerted my sister just
in time. Most of the family was already asleep on the top floor
of their townhouse. From the moment they realized what was happening, they had about
10 minutes to get everyone out. Within those same 10 minutes, the entire
top floor was already in flames.
The cause was a heartbreaking
accident. A charcoal grill reignited roughly 45 minutes after being turned
off. Embers flew beneath the siding of the home, igniting fiberglass padding
inside the walls. The fire spread rapidly.
Seven
townhouses were completely destroyed.
My sister, her partner, and all six of their children made it out alive—and for that, we are endlessly grateful. But they escaped with nothing.

They lost everything
they own.
There was no renter’s insurance,
so nothing will be covered. Now they are facing the overwhelming reality of starting
over all at once—finding housing, coming up with first and last month’s
rent, and replacing every basic necessity.

As if this wasn’t already devastating enough, this happened the night before one of the worst winter storms expected. They are forecasted to receive up to two feet of snow tonight alone. They lost their home, their belongings, and their sense of safety—on the eve of a major storm.
Right now, our family is rallying around them. We are doing everything we can. But we also know the power of community, and we know many people will want to help.
