Help Bobby Caswell Through Kidney Failure and the Road Ahead
My family and I are asking for help for my dad, Robert “Bobby” Caswell who has recently experienced a devastating and unexpected health crisis.
In July, Bobby became seriously ill and was hospitalized with severe kidney failure. What began as a medical emergency has turned into a long and difficult road that we are still navigating.
During his hospitalization, doctors discovered that his kidneys were functioning at a critically low level. He developed severe anemia, profound weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, confusion, significant weight loss, and other complications related to his illness. He has lost approximately 30 pounds and has become extremely debilitated.
He has also been dealing with significant urinary problems and prostate abnormalities that require continued evaluation. His medical team is still working to determine the underlying cause of his illness and the extent to which his kidneys may recover.
Unfortunately, his kidney function has not recovered sufficiently, and he has now had to begin dialysis.
His first dialysis treatment was on August 22, 2026. He is currently transitioning from inpatient care to outpatient dialysis and has been transferred to a skilled nursing facility for rehabilitation and additional medical support.
The financial challenge
My dad has Medicare Part A but did not previously have Medicare Part B. Because he has only recently started dialysis, we are working urgently with Social Security, his dialysis provider, and his medical team to establish his ESRD Medicare coverage. Each dialysis treatment out of pocket is $350 and he will require this three times per week for the rest of his life.
In the meantime, our family will need to privately pay for his outpatient dialysis treatments while his Medicare coverage is being established. It has been estimated to take 4-6 months for his insurance coverage to become active.
Dialysis is not optional—it is now necessary to keep him alive.
In addition to dialysis, there are significant expenses associated with his ongoing care, including:
- Outpatient dialysis treatments
- Skilled nursing and rehabilitation
- Medical appointments and specialists
- Medications and medical supplies
- Transportation to and from dialysis
- Follow-up testing and imaging
- Potential home medical equipment and modifications
- Everyday living expenses while he is unable to care for himself independently
We are doing everything we can to navigate Medicare, Medicaid, and other financial assistance programs, but the immediate costs are substantial and the process takes time.
Why we’re asking for help
Bobby has always been someone who worked hard and tried to take care of family and his friends. None of us expected that he would suddenly become this sick or that our family would be facing the possibility of long-term dialysis and rehabilitation.
Right now, our priority is simple: keep him receiving the medical care and dialysis he needs while giving him the best opportunity to regain his strength and return home.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will help us cover his immediate medical expenses and give our family some breathing room while we work through the insurance and long-term care issues.

If you are lucky enough to know Bobby, you know he has a huge heart and a great sense of humor. He’s still cracking jokes and trying to make his family and the nurses and doctors laugh even though he is fighting with everything he has. We can’t wait for him to be back to his old self again!
