My name is pao (they, them), and I've been dreaming of gender bliss for many years now. As a trans Bori-Yorker cook and land steward, it's very fitting that my gender affirming surgery happens during a New York Spring. The season of renewal that each year offers miraculous gifts, with promises of revivification and bringing into prominence. My gift this year is being scheduled to get top surgery on Tuesday, May 19th and be rejuvenated alongside spring.

As a 41 year-old [older (elder to be)] trans person, it's taken me significant time to understand my trans identity and my own pace in the process. Access to surgery when I was in my 20s, was not so readily available or a reality [for me] the way it is now. Growing into myself has taken time, a lot of shedding and even more personal development- dique shadow work (:
My mind and body finally feel ready, and it also weighs heavy to be this vulnerable and ask for support. I have Amidacare public insurance but, unfortunately, it doesn't cover my full procedure. The nerve care to keep chest sensation and to save my original nipple is deemed too "experimental" to be fully covered-- as if body autonomy and affirmation weren't a dignified ask from healthcare.

I'll have to cover $8,000 out of pocket plus living expenses for the time that I'll be in recovery.
My current livelihood includes multiple jobs that I need to completely pause to allow for safe healing. I will not be able to cook for myself or others, farm, or go to any in-person interpreting events. I even have to pause the English classes that I'm giving to my translatinx and street vendor community.
Additionally, beyond the $8k, I'm fundraising to support my chosen fam that will be taking the time to care for me during my recovery when I'm not able-bodied.

Me llamo pao (elle), y llevo muchos años soñando con mi jayaera de género. Como cocinere y trabajadore de la tierra trans Bori-Yorker, resulta muy apropiado que mi cirugía de afirmación de género ocurra durante la primavera neoyorquina. La temporada de la renovación que cada año ofrece regalos milagrosos, con promesas de renacimiento y de salir a la luz. Mi regalo este año es tener programada la cirugía de pecho para el martes 19 de mayo y rejuvenecer junto a la primavera.

Como persona trans (mayor) de 41 años, me ha tomado mucho tiempo entender mi identidad trans y mi propio ritmo en el proceso. El acceso a la cirugía cuando tenía veintitantos años no era tan disponible ni una realidad [para mí] como lo es ahora. Crecer y encontrarme a mí misme me ha llevado tiempo, mudar muches/mucho en mi vida y aún más desarrollo personal: trabajo de dique, sombra (:

Mi mente y mi cuerpa por fin se sienten listes, y también me pesa mucho ser vulnerable y pedir apoyo. Tengo el seguro de salud público Amidacare, pero,  lamentablemente, no cubre la totalidad de mi intervención. El tratamiento de los nervios para mantener la sensibilidad en el pecho y conservar mi pezón original se considera demasiado «experimental» para estar totalmente cubierto, como si la autonomía y la afirmación de la cuerpa no fuera algo digno de pedir de tu salud medica.

Tendré que pagar $8,000 dólares de mi bolsillo, además de los gastos de cuidado durante el tiempo que esté en recuperación.

Mi sustento económico actual incluye varios trabajos que tengo que dejar completamente para permitir una recuperación segura. No podré cocinar para mí ni para otres, ni trabajar en la finca, ni acudir a ningún evento de interpretación presencial. Incluso tengo que suspender las clases de inglés que doy a mi comunidad translatina y vendedores ambulantes.

Además, más allá de los $8,000 dólares, estoy recaudando fondos para apoyar a mi familia escogida, que dedicará tiempo a cuidarme durante mi recuperación.
