In Support of Oscar’s Journey
Help Us Keep Oscar and His Family Secure, Supported, and Moving Forward
💙 Oscar’s Journey
Just before his second birthday, our little Oscar was diagnosed with cerebral palsy following a traumatic brain injury at birth that resulted in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). He also navigates cortical visual impairment (CVI) and requires intensive daily medical intervention—including supplemental oxygen, a feeding tube, suction, and specialized equipment. After spending nearly five grueling months in the hospital, Oscar is now home and has been able to receive care in his most familiar and supportive environment. However, it is just the beginning of a long journey of recovery, growth, and intensive therapy. Oscar’s Mom has been unable to work due to his significant medical needs and as a single mom, is the sole provider for their home.
During Oscar’s extensive hospital stay, the family depleted years of savings to remain by his side, later pouring their remaining resources into treatments and home care. The financial reality of managing ongoing specialized therapies is overwhelming. For example, just one intensive therapy program for Oscar can cost approximately $15,000 before factoring in travel, lodging, and specialized supplies. For a child with complex medical needs, the costs of pursuing therapies, adaptive equipment, supplies, and modifications for accessibility can quickly add up. Our mission is to provide Oscar with the therapies, equipment, accessibility, and resources he needs to continue making progress.
⚽️ Supporting His Big Brother
Caring for a child with complex medical needs impacts the whole household. While managing Oscar's intensive, around-the-clock medical care, Mom’s focus is also on ensuring Oscar's big brother is fully supported as he turns 13. Navigating the teenage years while carrying the emotional weight of a profound family transition and a sibling's medical needs is a massive burden. As a growing adolescent boy, he has his own therapeutic and medical needs separate from his younger brother. We are determined to make sure no one is lost in the shuffle. Beyond these primary needs, having positive outlets is essential to give him a healthy release, a sense of normalcy, and the space to just be a kid.
🌟A Test of Resilience
📊 How Your Donations Will Help
- Specialized therapies and intensive medical care.
- Respiratory and feeding supplies.
- Adaptive equipment and home accessibility modifications.
- Travel expenses for out-of-town treatments and medical appointments.
- Essential, therapeutic and health care to maintain his current treatment plans and well-being.
- Sports, activities, and opportunities for much-needed relaxation and fun.
- Developmental resources and dedicated support to help him thrive socially and connect with peers.
- Childcare and respite support so Mom can balance the demands of both children and give each one dedicated, quality time.
- Resources so Mom has time for essential self-care and avoid burn out.
- Ongoing daily living expenses (ex: housing, utilities, groceries, maintenance costs) to keep the household running smoothly while Mom is unable to work.
These resources can help Oscar work toward greater mobility, communication, independence, comfort, and quality of life, while also ensuring that his big brother has the attention, care, and support that he needs and deserves. And in turn, a devoted mother will get a little peace of mind as she continues to work tirelessly to provide for her children.
- Donate: If you are able to support this family financially, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
- Share: If you are unable to give at this time, sharing this SupportNow page with your own network is just as meaningful.
- Offer: If you are able to offer meals or “in person” help, such as child care, help around the house, handy work, etc. please use the “Meals” or “Lend a Hand” section of this page or contact the family directly.
- Why SupportNow? We chose SupportNow instead of GoFundMe so that more of each donation stays in the family's hands rather than being reduced by platform fees. Each supporter is given the option to cover these costs when a donation is made so that their full donation goes directly to the family.
- Our Goal: This is a progressive fundraising goal. With the expanded care requirements for both boys and their ongoing household modifications, the overall financial need is expected to be more than $25,000.
