In Support of Munoz Family

Munoz Family
If you know Maria Muñoz, you know that asking for help does not come easily to her.

Maria is one of the hardest-working people I have ever met. She is a full-time library associate and, until recently, also worked a second full-time job at a fast food establishement—often working more than 80 hours a week between her two jobs. She has spent her life doing whatever it takes to provide for her family and support her two children, Luis and Victoria.

Maria is also a two-time cancer survivor. Although she has overcome the immediate threat of cancer, her medical journey is not entirely behind her, and she continues to undergo regular hospital monitoring. Through her own health challenges, the rising cost of living, and the everyday responsibilities of caring for her family, Maria has continued to work tirelessly to keep her family secure.

Last September, that hard work finally brought a milestone she was incredibly proud of: Maria was able to move herself and her two children from the two-bedroom apartment they had always shared into a three-bedroom apartment.

It was a huge accomplishment for her. A little more room for everyone and a tangible sign that all those long hours and sacrifices were paying off.

Recently, on August 27, the circumstances for this family dramatically changed.

Maria’s son, Luis, was involved in a car accident. Thankfully, his injuries were not life-threatening, but he suffered a concussion and a leg injury and continues to experience concussion symptoms. He requires ongoing medical monitoring, imaging, appointments, physical therapy, and someone available to care for him while he recovers.

Luis is currently unable to work. His sister, Victoria, had already made the difficult decision to take time off from school because the family could no longer afford her attendance. She has now stepped into the role of helping care for her brother.

The vehicle involved in the accident was totaled. The accident and insurance investigation remain pending, and the family has been told it may take a month or longer before there is a resolution. Even then, they do not yet know whether an insurance payout will leave enough after paying the remaining auto loan balance to replace the vehicle.

The family is now down to one vehicle and has lost two sources of income.

Luis can no longer work his full-time job while he recovers. Maria also had to leave her second full-time job because she needs to be available to take Luis to medical appointments and physical therapy and help care for him during his recovery.

For a woman who was already working more than 80 hours a week to keep her family afloat, losing that income and transportation so suddenly has been devastating.

Their current apartment costs more than what the family can sustain on Maria's remaining income. Their lease ends in December, and the family will need to move again—this time downsizing to a two-bedroom apartment or finding another more affordable option.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help the Muñoz family through the next few months. Donations will help with:

  • Moving expenses and the costs of securing more affordable housing

  • Reliable transportation after the loss of their vehicle

  • Immediate household expenses while the family is without two of its previous incomes

  • Costs associated with getting Luis to medical appointments and physical therapy

  • Giving Maria and her family some breathing room while Luis recovers and they rebuild their financial stability

Maria has spent years working extraordinary hours, caring for her family, overcoming cancer, and doing everything she can to build a stable life for the people she loves. She is usually the person doing the helping.

Right now, she and her family need some help in return.

Please help us raise $10,000—or, hopefully, surpass it—to give the Muñoz family the chance to get through this unexpected crisis, find an affordable home, secure reliable transportation, and get back on their feet.

Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a difference. And if you aren't able to donate, sharing this fundraiser is another meaningful way to help.

Thank you for showing Maria, Luis, and Victoria that they don't have to carry all of this alone.
