On Sunday, August 16th, Michael was taken to the hospital after experiencing a severe headache. What began as an unexpected trip to the hospital quickly turned into every family’s worst nightmare. Upon arrival, doctors discovered that Michael had multiple severe unexplained intracranial hemorrhages (brain bleeds). He was immediately admitted to the PICU and rushed into emergency surgery to relieve the pressure caused by the bleeding in his brain.
After a three-hour surgery, Michael remained in critical condition. During this time, doctors also discovered that he was suffering from Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL), a rare and fast-growing form of blood cancer that severely affects the body’s ability to produce healthy blood cells, including red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells.
For the next two days, Michael remained in critical condition while his medical team worked around the clock, doing everything within their power to save his life. His family stayed by his side, praying, hoping, and believing that he would somehow pull through.
Early Wednesday morning, Michael’s heart began to fail as his body could no longer withstand the tremendous amount of stress it had endured. With his loved ones by his side, Michael passed away peacefully a few hours later.
Michael was only 17 years old and had just begun his senior year of high school. He should have been looking forward to making memories with his friends, celebrating his final year of high school, and dreaming about all that his future held. Instead, our family is now faced with the unimaginable loss of a son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, and friend.
There are no words that can truly express the heartbreak of losing someone so young, so suddenly, and so unexpectedly. In just a few short days, our family went from worrying about a headache to facing a loss we never could have imagined. Michael had so much life ahead of him, and we are devastated that he will not have the opportunity to experience the future he deserved.
Michael was deeply loved, and his absence has already left an enormous hole in all of our hearts. We would give anything to have more time with him. To hear his voice, see his smile, and watch him continue to grow into the young man he was becoming. We would do anything to hear one of his sarcastic comments again, even the ones that made us roll our eyes.
We are asking for help with the unexpected funeral and memorial expenses that have come with this devastating loss. Any contribution, no matter how small, would mean more to our family than we can put into words. If you are unable to donate, sharing Michael’s story or a memory you have of Michael and keeping our family in your thoughts and prayers means just as much.
