Mia’s Journey
Mia is a bright, joyful 3-year-old who has already walked through more than most will ever face. She was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a condition that causes joint contractures and muscle weakness, and at 10 months she survived a near-drowning, which has affected her speech, processing, and balance.
Mia has two major therapy intensives that could be truly life-changing:
- NAPA Center – Denver:
She will receive three hours every day for three weeks of PT, OT, and Speech Therapy at one of the top pediatric therapy facilities in the world.
- KinActive Kids – Dallas:
She will participate in a two-week PT intensive, giving her another powerful opportunity to build strength, balance, and coordination.
Together, these therapies are critical building blocks for her independence. But with travel and the cost of both intensives, the total comes to about $15,000. Insurance rarely covers DMI or intensive-style programs, even though they are some of the most impactful interventions available.
Raising a child with a disability can cost $1.4–$2.4 million, nearly ten times more than raising a neurotypical child. It’s not an even playing field, and asking for help is never easy for families — but sometimes it’s the only way to open the doors our children desperately need.
