If you know my mom, Linda, you know she’s spent her entire life taking care of everyone else. From her years working in the Emergency Department to supporting her students at SUCO (I can't count how many we had over for Thanksgiving/Christmas).  She has always been the one providing the care and attention.

Now, it’s our turn to lean in for her.

This spring we found a recurrence of breast cancer that we thought we'd put behind us.  So this time around we're getting active in beating this back. Her current team at Bassett Healthcare Center has been great, but we are pursuing second opinions at leading cancer centers to ensure we have the most effective strategy moving forward. And it turns out that costs money.

Our Goal: Expert Consultation My mom is not one to ask for help, but she deserves the same level of advocacy she has given her students, residents and patients for decades. We are raising funds to cover the out-of-pocket costs for getting second opinions on her treatment from the best cancer doctors in the country and the travel required to get her there.

What we are aiming for:

  • Second Opinion Consultation Costs.
    • Dana Farber $3,000(!).
    • MD Anderson ($600)
    • Mayo Clinic - TBD
    • Fred Hutch - $1000
    • MSK: (this one's free!)

  • Costs and copays not covered by Medicare/Insurance: The last thing we want is to not get the best care because of the cost now that my mom is mostly dependent on Social Security.

  • The Logistics: Any funds we raise beyond that will go directly toward travel and lodging expenses to make sure she can get to her appointments without the added stress of the bill.

 Why This Matters

Linda isn't one to ask for help—she’s much more comfortable being the one to give it. But we want to make sure she receives the same level of advocacy and world-class care that she gave for so many years.

She needs to get back to the things she actually enjoys: her garden, her community, and her cat..

How You Can Help

  1. Donate: Every contribution goes directly toward these consultation fees and medical costs.

  2. Share: Sharing this page helps us reach the many people whose lives my mom has touched over the years.

  3. Encouragement: Please leave a note! She’d love to hear from you (though she might try to give you advice instead).

Thank you for helping get my mom the "Gold Standard" of care she has earned.

As her treatment begins, we will update this site with other ways you can support her (maybe donating an afternoon of weeding - or Chewy giftcards for Scooter).  Please stay tuned for all the ways you can help support my mom.
