In June, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. While it is considered early stage, it is extensive enough that a mastectomy is the only treatment option. On August 14, I will undergo a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction using abdominal tissue—major surgery that is essentially two procedures in one. My hope is that surgery will be all that's needed and that no additional treatment will be necessary.
I will be out of work for approximately 6 weeks during my recovery. Understandably, I wasn’t saving my PTO for a cancer diagnosis, so I have almost no paid time off available. The copays, testing, appointments, and other medical expenses have already been overwhelming, and the larger medical bills are still to come.
