One MRI Saved Her Life. Now She Needs Help Rebuilding It.

Katie is a devoted single mom whose world changed overnight.

Earlier this year, she randomly volunteered for a research study at MUSC. With no family history of breast or ovarian cancer and no symptoms, she never imagined the study would reveal she carries the BRCA2 genetic mutation, placing her at a significantly increased risk for cancer.

After making the difficult decision to have her fallopian tubes and ovaries removed to reduce that risk, Katie underwent her very first breast MRI.

That MRI found a tiny tumor that no mammogram had detected.

A biopsy confirmed Stage I breast cancer.

On July 10, Katie underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Thankfully, her cancer was caught early, her lymph nodes were clear, and she will not need chemotherapy or radiation. While she is incredibly grateful, her journey is far from over.

Katie still faces another major surgery for breast reconstruction, months of recovery, and time away from work. As a single mom, the financial burden of medical bills, lost income, and everyday living expenses has become overwhelming.

One decision to participate in a research study—and one MRI—saved Katie’s life. It gave her something priceless: more time with her son.
