Our family is reaching out for help for our grandson, Karson, and his family as they face an incredibly unexpected and frightening medical journey.
What began as shoulder pain that everyone believed was related to football or weight training quickly turned into a medical emergency. When Karson's pain became unbearable and moved into his chest, his dad took him to the emergency room. Tests revealed that Karson's right lung had completely collapsed.
Doctors inserted a chest tube, but his lung would not reinflate. He was transported by ambulance to Cook Children's, where doctors discovered a very large bleb that was pressing against his right lung and preventing it from expanding. It was so large that it was also pushing his heart toward his left lung.
Karson was taken into surgery to remove it, beginning what we thought would be the road toward recovery. Unfortunately, his lung continued to leak air and would not seal properly. He has now spent weeks in the hospital, enduring chest tubes, constant suction, X-rays, CT scans, additional surgery, procedures, pain medication, breathing exercises, and many ups and downs.
Then our family received news we never expected.
After additional testing and pathology, doctors determined that Karson had developed pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) as a child. His doctors explained to the family that his body had fought off the cancer cells, leaving behind the abnormal lung tissue that had caused so many of the problems he is now facing. He required another surgery to remove the remaining diseased portion of his lung.
Because his case is extraordinarily rare, Karson has been entered into a cancer study program, and his medical team has been consulting with other doctors as they determine the best course of treatment and recovery.
Through everything, Karson has continued to fight.
This is the same kid who went to football practice, lifted weights, and played in his first game of the season while unknowingly dealing with a collapsed lung. That determination has stayed with him throughout this ordeal. He has worked on his breathing exercises, pushed himself to eat and stay hydrated, gotten out of bed and walked when he could, and kept fighting through procedures and setbacks.
Unfortunately, his lung has continued to have difficulty sealing. Most recently, doctors performed a blood patch procedure in hopes of stopping the ongoing air leak. His care team continues to monitor him closely while deciding what additional procedures may be necessary.
What was supposed to be a much shorter hospital stay has turned into weeks away from home, with no simple timeline for when this journey will finally be over.
We are starting this GoFundMe to help Karson's family with the financial burden that comes along with an extended hospitalization and recovery. Donations will help with expenses such as medical costs, travel and transportation, meals, time away from work, and the many unexpected expenses that arise when your entire focus has to become getting your child healthy and home.
No family expects something like this to happen. One week you're worrying about football practice and a sore shoulder, and the next you're sitting beside your child in a hospital room praying for his lung to heal.
If you are able to donate, any amount will help and will be deeply appreciated. If you aren't able to contribute financially, sharing Karson's story and keeping him and his family in your prayers means just as much to us.
We are incredibly thankful for the doctors, nurses, family, friends, and everyone who has prayed for Karson, checked on him, visited, sent messages, and supported our family throughout these difficult weeks.
Karson still has a road ahead of him, but he is fighting hard, and we are taking this journey one day at a time.
Please help us support Karson and his family so they can concentrate on what matters most—getting him healed, getting him home, and getting him back to being a kid again.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every donation, share, prayer, and kind word.
Please keep the prayers coming for Karson. ❤️
