Keegans Journey Forward
Week 1 Wrap Up:Β
This week they had Keegan working on all sorts of things. PT and OT worked on transitions from a crawling position into sitting, turning his head, head control, army crawling, bearing weight, and even walking! He has also discovered that he is a big fan of the shaky plate. He is so zen with that extra sensory input.Β
Speech has been just as busy. Theyβve been using different sour and sweet flavors to help wake up his mouth. (Lemons, lemon popsicles, tangerine popsicles)Β Keegan's faces have been hilarious! Heβs also been working on cause and effect, pressing buttons to activate a fan and even start videos on a tablet. The videos are high-contrast with animated animals and sounds and he was SO engaged. He would watch them so closely and clearly understood that he was doing something to start them.
And of course, because things are infamously never completely smooth with Keegan, we did have a little bump in the road. Wednesday, at the very end of his second PT session, he started crying and Keegan is not a crier. With his history of a fracture, there was definitely a moment of panic. His therapist didnβt think anything was broken, but out of an abundance of caution, we ventured to the ER in downtown Charlotte. The amazing staff there took X-rays and confirmed: no fractures! Just a very sore little boy using muscles he either hasnβt used in a very long time or maybe has never really used before.
By the end of the week, you could actually see how hard he was concentrating on what his therapists were asking him to do. He would listen, give a sour face, furrow those little brows, and try so hard to figure out how to activate his body in the way they were teaching him. Watching that concentration on his face has been incredible.
All of this in ONE week. It's been a whirlwind, but so much fun!
We still have two more weeks to go, and I am fully convinced we are going to leave here with a totally different kid. I cannot wait to see what next week brings.
The therapists at NAPA are truly something special. They are bubbly, encouraging, knowledgeable, creative, and so incredibly invested in helping Keegan succeed. Watching this team work with him has been life-changing, and I am so thankful for every single one of them.
I think this weekend will be full of rest. We have Epsom salt baths and a heating pad for Keegan plus some easy adventuring around the cute downtown near where we're staying. I think there may even be a farmers market there! Keegan will be so happy to relax outside and listen to all the busyness around him.
One week down. Two to go. And I already cannot believe how much we have done!Β
