Weston had his first heart surgery on November 12th to place his Berlin heart pump. It was a long day for Ty and I. I got to hold Weston for most of the morning before he left around 1:30pm, a nurse called around 3:30 to tell us he was under anesthesia and doing well, 5:30 they called that he was on bypass and working on his heart, 7:30 nurse told us she had seen one of his heart doctors in the hall and he said Weston was off bypass and they were working on closing, 8:30 the surgeon came and told us that surgery had gone well without any surprises. We got to see Weston around 10pm and it was shocking to see our little baby hooked up to a big machine (weighs around 300lbs) that is pumping his heart, Weston has an IV in every limb again and also IV lines going in by his shoulder that go straight to his heart to give meds. They had to leave his chest open to allow for swelling. Thursday morning we came back to the hospital, perfusionist said Weston was doing well and transitioned very nicely to the Berlin heart pump. Weston had an EEG of his brain for over 24hrs after surgery, everything looked good on that.
Today Weston got his chest closed. Wound VAC placed over chest closure and around the heart pump tubes. They hope to extubate him either Sunday or Monday it all depends on what Weston needs for support. Will continue to wean meds for now as needed.
Now we just wait patiently for a miracle but most likely wait for the perfect heart for transplant.
I have never really thought about how important organ donation is until now. Ty and I had both put ourselves down as donors when we got our licenses renewed in 2023 and I remember having the conversation with him that if someone could use any part of me they could have it because I won’t need it when I’m gone. I think everyone should mark themselves as a an organ donor. One donor can save at least 8 lives.
