The Shuman Family
Todd got to come home last Friday. We surprised the kids as they weren't expecting us until Sunday. Our oldest was walking down the hall when we walked through the door. At first it took him back for a second and then he ran into his arms and just started bawling. This has been harder on our kids than I think even they have realized. 5 weeks he was gone from his family. 9 months of doctor appointments, ER visits, weekly chemo, lots of medicines, fear, peace, love....it's been a rollercoaster ride and so many incredible people constantly serving our family. I wish I could say it was over, but we know it's not. We are so grateful for this transplant to "extend life" as the doctors say.
Todd goes back 90 days after transplant to receive another Bone Marrow Biopsy to ensure the transplant did what we needed it to do and a full body scan. Depending on those results, they will start him on a certain Immunotherapy drug (the one that costs almost $2K a month) as well as his monthly immunotherapy injections that he will have for the rest of his life. Then depending on the results he could have other forms of treatment, too. If all continues to look good, he will get a bone marrow biopsy every year.
We are loving having him home. He's doing so well and is anxious to get back to work. The doctor kind of laughed at Todd when he asked if he could go back to work this week. The doctor told him that most people take off 3-6 months with this big of a procedure. But, I doubt it will take Todd that long. He loves what he does and loves to stay busy. His body has been through a lot and rest is the best thing. He does get easily worn out but I have a feeling it won't be long before he's back to his normal "yet improved with new stem cells" self. ;)
Thanks again for all of your support in all of the many ways. We truly are so grateful.
Welcome home babe. What a journey this has been and you do it all with such grace and strength. #shumanstrong
