Yesterday was a busy day. Kelly completed her 10th and final radiation treatment. Way to go Kelly!! She even got to ring a bell signifying she had completed it! We follow up with the Radiation Oncologist in 6 weeks for a new scan to determine if any additional radiation treatments are needed.
Kelly also had an appointment with the Pulmonologist, primarily because Kelly felt that her shortness of breath was getting worse, even after draining her pluerx daily. Following a chest x-ray it was determined that Kelly is starting to accumulate fluid on her left lung in addition to her right. The Pulmonologist recommended that Kelly have a 2nd pluerx drain put in to drain the fluid on her left side. This has been scheduled for Monday at 8am.
After discussing with the Pulmonologist that we had not been able to meet with Oncologist yet due to limited availability, the Pulmonologist felt that Kelly needed to see the Oncologist as soon as possible instead of waiting until Feb 3rd when our appointment had been scheduled. The Pulmonlogist made a call to Kelly's Oncologist who decided to see us right then. Thankfully the Oncologist was just down the street.
We were quickly checked in at the Oncologist and was able to meet with Kelly's Oncologist who walked us through everything that Kelly was dealing with. Most of the information she gave us were things we already knew but did add that she wanted Kelly to begin Chemo as soon as possible. This was scheduled for this coming Tuesday and would take 3-4 hours for the infusion. Unfortunately the molecular test results still had not come back so we would have to wait to determine if Kelly would also need immunotherapy or targeted therapy.
Now for some more good news...after leaving the Oncologist office and as we pulled into our driveway, Kelly received a call from the Oncologist who sounded on the verge of tears. She had just received the molecular test results and it was determined that Kelly's cancer was caused by a mutation which now means no chemotherapy, and Kelly will be able to treat her specific type of cancer by taking a daily pill. The Tuesday chemo appointment will now be for us to discuss the updated treatment plan and hopefully start taking this pill immediately. The Oncologist felt that given this updated treatment plan, that Kelly could see some relief in weeks versus months.
We are overjoyed with this news and are hopeful that this new treatment plan will put us one step closer to Kelly seeing some relief. We were told that this treatment has shown great results in it's effectiveness towards Kelly's specific type of mutation.
God Bless!
