Keegans Journey Forward
Today was the last day of 3 long, exhausting, and completely worthwhile weeks.Β
60 hours! Keegan has worked so hard over 60 hours of therapy at NAPA. He has spent his days shaking, rolling, bouncing, prop sitting, standing, walking and kneeling in a spider cage, army crawling, and relearning how to find and use muscles that havenβt been accessible to him in a while. He worked on neck and head control, range of motion, and getting his body to respond to the things his brain is asking it to do. He worked on feeding and oral skills too, tasting all kinds of yummy things (with lemon popsicle officially becoming the favorite) He worked on communication with eye gaze, switch buttons, and the NeuroNode, giving us even more glimpses into how much he has to say.
In all his hardwork, Keegan spent the week doing what Keegan does best, stealing hearts, making friends, and cheering on everyone around him while they worked hard too. π₯Ή
Today was graduation, and his team celebrated all of his successes and strengths. He is SO much closer to head control and has a better range of motion in his neck. He has shown us just how much he wants to communicate, how incredibly well he can follow verbal instructions, and that he will keep persevering even when those tired little eyes are begging him to close them.
We definitely had some tears saying goodbye today. But weβve already requested a spot for next year because we know we want to come back to Charlotte and keep building on this work. β€οΈ A second trip like this would only be possible because of the generosity and support of everyone who contributed. We are truly, truly thankful for you! You have helped give Keegan the opportunity to unlock pieces of his potential and reminded him of things his body could do before seizures and illness changed his access to them.
Now we take everything weβve learned home. We have a plan with his home therapists, a home exercise program, and SO much work to keep doing. Weβre going to keep building this strength, one muscle at a time. These three weeks have proven that Keegan is capable of so much more than his body sometimes lets him show us.
I am so incredibly thankful that we got to give him this experience. And I cannot wait to see what he does with it. π
