A Real Life Reminder

Yesterday gave us another reminder of why we’re working so hard to raise funds for an accessible vehicle.

We were at Kennedy Krieger for one of Fiona’s orthopedic appointments. Every accessible parking space was occupied, so I parked in a regular spot away from the other cars, hoping we’d have enough room to get Fiona back into her car seat after the appointment.

When we returned, another vehicle had parked beside us. The driver did absolutely nothing wrong—they were parked completely within the lines.

But because our current vehicle requires me to fully open the passenger door to transfer Fiona into her car seat, I couldn’t get the door open wide enough.

It’s one of those challenges most people never have to think about. For us, it’s just another reminder that our vehicle no longer meets Fiona’s needs.

A rear-entry wheelchair accessible van would completely change situations like this. Instead of depending on the space beside our vehicle, Fiona could enter safely through the rear, making parking lots far less stressful and much safer for all of us.

It’s hard to put into words how much mental energy goes into planning every outing around transfers, parking, lifting, and hoping nothing unexpected happens.

Thank you to everyone who has supported, donated, or shared our fundraiser. Every act of kindness brings us one step closer to a vehicle that would give Fiona greater independence and make everyday moments like yesterday so much easier.

Your support means more than you know. 💜
