Zeke's Journey
As you know, we have been getting Zeke’s labs every 4 weeks.
1st lab - 26 bicarb
2nd lab - 23 bicarb
This second lab led to us contacting our PCP and collaborating on next steps, which was ger another test one week later. And get fluids if needed.
3rd lab - 22 bicarb
So, from what I’ve read, bicarb should only fluctuate +\-1 or 2.
Additionally, Zeke has not been having repeated vomiting like before.
Unfortunately, our PCP did not have the fluids we needed so we had to decide if we wanted to wait until next week when the fluids came in or go to the ER.
After praying and watching, we decided to go to the ER. And we are glad bc now his bicarb was a 19!
He got fluids and we came home last night.
Pls pray that the fluids given will help his body create the bicarb it needs so we don’t have to go back.
Now, you might be wondering, where is the praise?
The praise is - we can SEE evidence his body is healing. He is not having recurring vomiting like before. He is still taking all of his feeds. We can see that his body is trying so hard to manage this and that shows progress. We have never been able to just go get fluids and then leave the ER.
Gut healing takes time. Even though one doc said “his gut would heal in a month” I know this is not true nor is it supported by research. The micro biome is very intricate and there are layers of healing. So we know we might have to go back to the ER for more fluids. Or we might have to get admitted again on this healing journey.
But for right this moment, we are praising God that we got to come home. And as I write this, I hear him happily talking to Dada.
