Update 1/10 7:20pm
Please read the following statements below including the context I have provided right after. Please share this post to spread awareness about Uriel's case and about the reality of the racism and ignorance we are experiencing.
"My husband is not perfect but he is no criminal. I have had conversations where the questions again and again are “why was he stopped? Why was he detained?” The truth is difficult to process because it reveals injustice and forces blind eyes to face it. I am in no way political but I will speak the truth when necessary. The tactics being used target anyone that just looks like they don’t belong. I can say that with certainty why? Because my husband has no criminal record, we are in the middle of his legalization process, he was finger printed he wasn’t running. So if this is about criminals and those who harm our society, WHY IS HE STILL DETAINED? We are believers, so I know there’s a purpose. I’m starting to see that part of it is to open eyes and stir hearts because it doesn’t make sense because THERES NO WAY TO MAKE IT MAKE SENSE." - Rosa Velasco
"Aclaración: la razón por la que mi yerno fue detenido por ICE es simplemente por ser latino de color, el no es un criminal no tiene ningún antecedente penal, su récord está limpio hasta ese día que fue detenido, el es buen hombre ejemplar. Yo agradezco de todo corazón el apoyo de todos . Gracias gracias." -Martha Rivas (Rosa and I's mother. Uriel's mother in law)
We share this in response to multiple people questioning if Uriel committed a crime and if that was the reason he was detained. The clear answer is: No. While these questions are presented as wanting to be informed the truth is it touches on the ignorance and prejudice that exists. It touches on the notion that "Uriel must have been doing something wrong in order to be detained." Uriel has never committed any crime. He was not committing a crime when pulled over. He was on his way to work to support my sister and my three nephews despite having injury induced sciatic nerve pain and not being able to walk without being in pain. We kindly ask for people to stop reaching out to our family, our employers and our loved ones with these questions or comments. It may be hard for some people to face the truth but the reality is that ICE agents followed his work van and pulled him over for no other reason than the color of his skin.
The majority of people have been nothing but supportive and we are forever grateful. We believe that our greatest protector and defender is God and we will continue to hold steadfast in our faith. We thank you for your understanding and ask that you share this post in order to spread awareness.
