Today, Abigail had her swallow study, and the results showed that she aspirates quite a bit with both thin and thick consistencies. We are a little bummed by this news because she is finally starting to show real interest in eating by mouth and learning how to swallow. We should hear from GI and the ENT doctor sometime this week to learn what they recommend as the next steps.
I also forgot to mention that yesterday they did a Trach manometry test to see if she still has any obstruction and whether she builds up too much pressure when her trach is capped. The test showed that she does build significant pressure, indicating her jaw is causing a decent amount of obstruction, even though her airway is now fully open. We should also hear from pulmonology sometime this week about what they recommend moving forward.
Please pray that Abigail can get a CT scan of her jaw before Friday. If not, we will need to come back at the end of May for it.
While today’s results were disappointing, we know every test gives important information that helps guide the next steps for Abigail’s care. Thank you for continuing to pray for her.
