That is not one, but two new car seat boxes. The baby needs to move up from her infant seat, so we decided to take the opportunity to try a new seat for Winnie and pass her seat down to baby.
Winnie’s car seat has worked well for her for a while, but as she gets longer and more stiff, that is no longer the case (one of the reasons why we are fundraising for a wheelchair accessible van 😀). It is very difficult for us to get her in and out of the car, and she needs to be rear facing since she cannot sit upright due to her lack of head control.
I did some research and looked for advice from other special needs moms and the consensus was to try a rotating car seat. You can swivel the seat to face the car door to be able to place them in more easily and then spin it into either a forward facing or rear facing position.
The first option I tried was a no-go. There was not enough leg room for her due to the base that the rotating car seats sit on. It also had a padded leg rest that sounded like a nice feature, but was ultimately just more in the way for her long legs.
I went ahead and ordered option number two (no small expense). I have not had the chance to actually try Winnie in the seat yet, but it looks a lot more promising. It also offers the option to recline ever so slightly in a forward facing position, so we will see if that is enough for her head to not fall forward.
This is one example of many where the first try doesn’t always work out for Winnie girl, especially when it comes to seating options. I’m thankful that there are more choices these days, but the search is never easy.
