Hello everyone,
It has taken me a few days to be able to write this update because I wanted to "get it right" and "do it well" but the truth is that I will NEVER be able to do either, so I'm just going to say it this way -- It is with an indescribable level of sadness and a long list of other emotions that I write this update.
On August 20th Damon transitioned to his next great adventure. He passed away peacefully with me holding him in my arms surrounding him with a tremendous amount of love and light. He was not alone. He was not in pain (and did not require pain medicine). He was not afraid. He went to sleep and simply moved from the physical to the spiritual realm.
On August 21st I celebrated our 22nd wedding anniversary (along with my sister-cousin, Kristal & my mother). It was a hard day.
I imagine that some of you will have questions, just keep in mind that while I shared a lot of the journey with all of you on this support page, there are things I did not and will not share in order to honor his privacy, his legacy, and his right to make his own choices about his health.
In the end, Damon was at peace with every decision he made and was not filled with regret, dread, anger, or fear.
I will hold a Celebration of Life for him in the coming weeks, please give me time, space, and grace to figure it all out, make some decisions, and be with my grief.

The FOUR people "authorized" to:
- give updates about Damon's passing
- and share the details of his Celebration of Life
are me (his wife, Kiala Givehand); Kristal Johnson (Kiala & Damon's Sister-Cousin); Ebonee Lumpkin & Tiffany Smith (Kiala's closest friends). Anyone else giving you information is likely NOT giving you the most accurate, official, and truthful version.
And there is only ONE person "authorized" to
- give you the facts about his 20 month health journey and the 23 days he spent in the hospital and that is me, his wife. NO ONE else knows the whole story, the truth, and the version that centers Damon and his experience.
Damon spent the last 30 years of his life in search of and in defense of TRUTH and he did so with integrity. I will always honor those things that mattered most to him. You are free to ask questions in this thread, but I invite you to read through all the updates we have posted on this page up to this point before you ask.
Because I am a complex human with a multitude of emotions that can live in the body all at once, I am experiencing a tremendous amount of pain, anger, frustration, sadness, and peace. I'm working on accepting that this is my new reality. I am grateful for the almost 40 years of friendship & 22 years of marriage I got to have with him. I am grateful that I can say I knew him better than anyone else on this planet. I am grateful that I was the one holding him when he took his last breath. I am grateful that I was able to love on him in his final days with full attention and intention. And I am grateful for the love and support of our various communities that made it possible for me to be fully focused on him during his most vulnerable moments. I am grateful to have been loved unconditionally by him. I am grateful that I got to be the one to hear all of his hope & dreams. And I am grateful to have loved such a beautifully complex, caring, compassionate, and loving soul.
I ask that you give me space and time. I am not currently responding to all of your messages and notes. I just do not have the bandwidth for conversation. I'm not really on my phone much right now. I'm not checking email. I'm not returning phone calls or responding in text in any real way. I'm heartbroken and extremely sad. My best friend is gone forever and life makes zero sense to me at the moment. I am surrounded by the most important women in my life and being well cared for and looked after. I am eating and sleeping in small moments that are enough to sustain me.
I will continue to use this space to update you on the Celebration of Life for Damon and to connect with each of you for a few weeks as we all wrap our brains around this new reality. I invite you to remember who he was to you if you had a connection to him and to remember what nugget of wisdom he shared with you if your paths had the honor of crossing. This is one way to begin making sense of a world without him.
If you are in the PPP community, please check there for the replay of a livestream I did in the community. It has additional information for our members.
Those of you who were already informed of his passing have asked about sending flowers and other things to me. I ask that you hold off for a bit until I know what makes the most sense. I will be establishing a few scholarships in Damon's name that you're more than welcome to contribute to should you want to do something other than send flowers.
Stay tuned.
With deep gratitude,
Kiala
