On the irony of surrender

The  first thought I had in my mind after hearing I had a brain tumor was"I can't miss my sons' adu;lthood milestones!.... whateverr this is, I will fight it Aand dance with marco and teo at their weddings. It was a premature thought of course, but it was so strong. It has been my ground this whole time. I know my main dream and goal in life is to raise my holy men to go to Heaven, and so far I've  felt more than capable to acheive this, but then again, I had never been faced with my mortalityand the effects of tHAT. MY THOUGHT THERfore began to transform into a surrender prayer," God I know they will be holy men with or without me, help me accept I'm not the one missing key, just YOU are. it was a weirdly easy thing to surrender: my strong dessire to raise them, to just accept the possiblemortal risks of a craniotomy, knowing for sure God's got the boys no matter what. it's weirdly harder to surrender now in rehab, now:,  I have to physically allow strangers to take care of me and i really hate it. I like to take care of others, thAT IS THE IDENTITY I enjoyand did not want to surrender. My next fact share this may make you think I'm insane but who are you to judge someonewith a swollen half brainand limited left mobility: I csnnot stand being in a bathrooom if domeone else is brushing their teeth. It makes me panic. same panic if anyones in my bathrooom ehile I brufh my own teeth. And now these days I have a team of nurses give me ashower, dry me up, , hold me up to the mirror, an hand me my toothbrushto use in front of everyone. It's so psyvologically difficult for nme. How do I surrender this?

Hang in there. God needs to break us down before He builds us back up again. You're stronger than you think. He knows your strength better than you do. You've got this!

Psalm 121 (NIV)1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.3 He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;4 indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.5 The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand;6 the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life;8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Praying xxx

Oh Andrea, what a heartfelt expression of what you are experiencing- thank you so much for sharing. You are such a strong, loving and giving person to so many people… it must be so hard to not be able to do all the things you normally do at this stage of your recovery. Please know that your love, caring and help for others is still there- even stronger- but in different ways now. You have brought so many people together and closer to our Lord by your beautiful example and unwavering faith. You are truly an inspiration to so many and will continue to be so. Always know Our Lord never gives more than we can bear and is there to help carry our crosses.. lean on Him when times get hard. Your friends and family are here too and it gives us joy to help you in any way we can. I love you so much!!! ❤️🙏😘

Hey Andrea! We are in the hospital this week and reading your thoughts put to paper (or … put to a screen;) was really helpful for myself. Thank you so much for sharing because your reflections are a gift.

Andrea, thank you for being so vulnerable with us all and allowing us in to pray with you. There were many months I have had to pray for the grace to be able to pray the surrender novena. Just know, God is working through even this struggle. Being humble enough to admit how hard it is honors Him. We are off to pray a rosary with our nightly rosary group now - your family is in our prayers every day! Jesus, I surrender myself to You, take care of eveything.
