St. Patrick’s Day has always been about a little luck, but this year, we have a much clearer definition of what that really means.
Today is Mike’s birthday, and it’s a day that allows us to pause and take stock of a whole lot of gratitude.
We are incredibly lucky to have Chelsea with us today. To hear her voice. To see her determination. To witness her resilience show up again and again, sometimes loudly and sometimes quietly, but always steadily. Today included a full slate of therapies…OT, PT, Speech, and Recreational…asking her to stretch in ways that aren’t always visible but take real effort. From balance exercises and head movement work, to reading and comprehension practice, to memory strategies and problem solving, she continues to meet each challenge with focus, grit, and that very familiar Chelsea spunk. She also finally enjoyed her outing to Dairy Queen this afternoon, too!
Along the way, we’ve also begun early conversations about outpatient therapies, talking through options thoughtfully and intentionally, knowing this next phase will require patience, trust, and time. No rushing. Just careful planning and steady forward motion.
And then there’s Mike, our birthday guy, steady presence, calm in the middle of chaos. That calm does come with a fair amount of grumbling about our stay here and the chair he insists on calling a “recliner,” despite the fact that it functions more like a medieval sleep device. He complains. Frequently. And then he flattens it out and sleeps there anyway, night after night, never wavering where it actually counts.
So if Irish luck is real, we’ve learned it doesn’t look like pots of gold or four leaf clovers. It looks like resilience. It looks like showing up. It looks like grit, humor, and love…even when the bed is terrible and the path isn’t easy.
Today we’ll wear green.
We’ll mark the day.
We’ll mark the day.
And we’ll raise a quiet toast to Mike, for another year and for the way he shows up, and to Chelsea, for her strength, her determination, and the light she brings with her every day. 🍀🌈💚🍻
