Today is Chelsea’s 16th birthday. Celebrating it from the hospital definitely wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card…but here we are, showing up anyway.

Friends and family found a way to make sure she knew she was being celebrated today. Chalk messages appeared outside…bright, colorful reminders that even from a distance, people showed up for her. It stopped us in our tracks. Proof that love finds its way in, even through hospital walls. 🫶🏻

And then there was Chelsea herself. Spunky. Independent. Funny. Very sarcastic. The kind of sarcastic that lets you know she’s fully paying attention and absolutely forming an opinion. The raised eyebrow. The perfectly timed comment. The “are you serious?” look that needs no translation. 🙄 That sharp wit and humor we know so well continues to show up more and more.

To celebrate her birthday, we bought cupcakes for the pediatric floor (PICU, step‑down, and rehab) and Chelsea helped deliver them herself. Plates, napkins, party hats and all. After 37 days here, she’s become something of a local celebrity, making the rounds and spreading birthday cheer with her sweet smile, charm, and sarcasm. At that point, it was pretty clear this was Chelsea’s floor, and we were just walking in it.🧁

We kept today simple and calm, but it was full in all the ways that matter. We’re incredibly grateful to the staff here who helped acknowledge her birthday with warm wishes, a card and a signed canvas, and to every single family member and friend who took time to send messages, prayers, chalk, and love. 💕

Sixteen looks a little different this year…but make no mistake, Chelsea is still very much Chelsea. And anyone who knows her knows…sarcastic comments are the real gift. 🫶🏻
