This morning we received a call from the surgery team notifying us that Steve would have the tracheostomy procedure done today. We had been waiting for this day!! His numbers were pretty consistent over the last few days, and despite his ventilator settings not being exactly where they wanted them to be, the surgery team decided to move forward anyway.
The call came in around Noon that the surgery was a success!! The procedure, including putting the feeding tube directly to his stomach, went well, and he is currently resting. We know that this is still the beginning of his recovery, but we are beyond grateful to the doctors and nurses for caring for him. The next step of this process will be to wean him from the sedation so he can more aggressively work toward getting off the ventilator support completely and start the intensive therapy that he will need.
Many, many thanks for your continued prayers and support!
