We visited Steve the last couple of days and he’s doing well. He is much more alert and is communicating and responding through hand squeezes, thumbs-up gestures, and eye movements. It’s clear that he can hear and understand us, and although he can’t speak right now because of the trach, he has plenty to “say” through his expressive eyebrows and faces he makes —it’s wonderful to see his personality is still there.
Steve also started physical therapy yesterday, and we’re already seeing progress. He was sitting up and kicking his legs, and giving high fives. He can't really hold himself up on his own yet, but it’s only his second day of PT, and he has been in a hospital bed for over a month, so we’re very encouraged by how well he’s doing.
We are grateful for the progress Steve has made over the past few days. We know he still has a long road ahead, but we’re hopeful and confident that he will continue getting stronger and healthier each and every day.
