Progress is rarely a straight line.... July 26, 2026

We have constantly been reminded that progress rarely moves in a straight line. It was disappointing that he could not have the tracheostomy procedure on Friday, and Saturday was a really hard day for him. His oxygen levels were dropping over and over and he was running a fever... again. It seems he is in this never ending loop of needing the tracheostomy because of the vent, but the vent is causing issues which are preventing the tracheostomy.
But we did get some good news today.
They were able to do a bronchoscopy to remove some of the secretions in his lungs which improved his oxygen levels and seemingly contributed to a reduction in his fever. They have also changed his sedation medication which seems to be having positive effects on keeping him alert but calm. The next step is for the surgery team to come assess him again and schedule the tracheostomy for early this week. We are hopeful that he is moving in the right direction.
We also learned that he will likely remain in the ICU for quite some time after the tracheostomy, so while he will eventually be transferred to a long term care hospital, it will be at least a week if not up to a month before he is moved.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support. We are truly grateful.
