Baby Steps... July 15, 2026

Small steps are still steps, and that is how we are able to stay positive about Steve's recovery.  Steve is on day 15 of the ventilator and they can’t safely take him off the ventilator yet, for a few reasons. Good news, Steve is still breathing on his own and getting 65% oxygen but they haven’t been able to successfully wean him off and out of sedation without an adverse reaction. His physicians are suggesting a temporary tracheostomy to relieve him and allow him to slowly and more safely wean off the ventilator. He is also spiking a high fever and Infectious Disease is looking into that immediately, as they cannot complete the procedure while he has a fever. We are now waiting for the surgery team to call with the plan and timing of the procedure, but it could happen as early as this week or next week. Our family and the docs are optimistic about this being the next best step for his recovery. 

Long term is still unknown until we can get him off the ventilator, but early estimates are that he will require months of care and therapy. As a result, we are increasing the amount of donation fund so that we can ensure he and the boys are supported through this time.
