It has been a long 5 days. He ran high fevers off and on for over 4 days. He had brutal headaches, horrible bone pain and was just plain miserable. They ended up doing IV antibiotics multiple times, platelets, CT scan of his brain and also a CT scan of his chest, stomach and pelvic area. All came back clear. When someone is neutropenic and has his levels of neutrophils they have to keep ruling everything out. Especially a brain bleed with his headaches.
Last night he seemed to have slightly turned a corner and today was a new day!
Todd got to break out of the hospital today!! We were both kind of shocked. Okay, everyone was kind of shocked. Doctors/PA and the nurses. They took his blood work at 4am and his neutrophils had shot up to a number they were okay releasing him with. Still WAY below the normal threshold but they had gone up. The doctor walked in and said, "Todd, you well exceeded my expectations. I am kind of in awe right now and you are free to go home if you choose." Mainly because his neutrophils hadn't come up much as of yesterday and so they were saying we would be there until the weekend, Friday at the earliest. But, then they sky rocketed with a big jump this morning.

The doctor on call (who is actually his normal Hematologist/Oncologist at Mayo) said that because he hadn't had a fever in 18 hours (at the time he saw us) and his neutrophils were so much higher (which means he is grafting) they felt comfortable sending him home. He will continue taking some antibiotics. He also said he doesn't believe Todd's fevers were a "fluke" but that he did have some kind of infection. (besides the Cellulitis) But, they couldn't find where or what it was. Since the big things are ruled out, they just move forward and hope the antibiotic does it's thing.
BUT if he has a fever, same protocol until day 60. Anything over 100.4 for longer than an hour, we call. Anything 101, we immediately call and he could be re-admitted. We pray that doesn't happen and the doctor doesn't seem to think it will.
I told Todd that every time I walked down stairs, I noticed everyone was being taken down in a wheelchair and told him that he would probably have to go down in one, too. Todd told our nurse that he refused to be wheel chaired out of the hospital. He would walk out. The nurse had been our nurse for 5 days now....she knew Todd and just laughed and said "Okay, let's go then!" and she walked him out. I blurred her face because I don't like to post peoples photos without permission. ;)
Todd wanted to go for a drive before coming back to the Airbnb. He has showered and is now resting on his P.E.M.F mat.
It's good to be out of the hospital. It's amazing how exhausting that is for some reason.
Glad to be out of there but so grateful for an amazing team of doctors/PA's and nurses and for all the prayers.
