Today was definitely a day of ups and downs.
Riley started the day sitting up, happy to see Mommy and Daddy as we walked in at the start of the day (Thanks, PRMH!). She had some time with Physical Therapy, helping her sit up and gave her some massage time (Riley didn't like it, but Mommy would have liked it!). She was a bit tired after, but who should come to visit but Grammy! She was happy to see her, and soon after, Music Therapy came in. Wonderful timing during a visit with Grammy! Because Riley was so tired, it was a time for quiet, calming music. We sang "Jesus Loves Me" with Mom and Grammy, the Therapist sang "Let it Go" for our Disney girl, and we ended with "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." My Mom sang a beautiful harmony for the last song, even the nurses were impressed (one thought it was a recording!). For those who don't know, my Mom is a retired Music Teacher, who LOVES to sing to Riley, so this was a very special moment for all. We were able to calm her and Riley fell asleep. Kyle and I were able to step out for a nice lunch with my Mom and my sister, Heather.
During rounds, the doctors let me know that one of Riley's lungs was not only sticking, but collapsed. They were hoping that chest percussion, medicine and rest would help, but they did warn us that they might need to re-intubate tomorrow. While we were out at lunch, they were having trouble with keeping her off her stomach and she was getting angry. She started to get worked up, and she began to become tachypneic. When they examined her lungs, they started to hear some warning signs in her right lung as well as her left. So, unfortunately, Riley had to be re-intubated and sedated. They said to expect her to stay that way for a few days so that she can they can get some cultures, an ECHO, and give her lungs a chance to recover. They reminded us that because she has T21, her lungs are a bit weaker and are working harder after surgery. Re-intubating does happen after surgery sometimes, and we shouldn't be too worried that it happened so quickly. They will work on bringing her off the respirator slowly, hoping that she'll be off of it by this weekend.
It's a hard time to leave, as I need to be back at my job tomorrow. I feel better leaving knowing that Kyle is able to stay close to her. Please pray for open lungs and rest for Riley, for Kyle as he takes the helm at the hospital, and for me and the boys as we go back to school. It's hard being apart at this time, but we keep telling ourselves that this is temporary.
