We have found a wonderful school for Paige to attend for middle school.
I had been planning to homeschool to best meet her academic needs. But in my heart, I knew that 1–2 afternoons of co-op each week would not fully meet this child’s deep desire to GO to school and to BE with other kids. Paige is social. She loves learning. She loves school.
A few months ago, I went to dinner with my former principal and assistant principal from my St. Joan of Arc days to catch up and discuss some long-term dreams for inclusion within the archdiocese. During that conversation, Independence Academy was mentioned as a possibility for Paige.
I filled out an inquiry form, and within that very first introductory call, I was struck by how deeply they wanted to know and understand her. I found myself sharing the many layers of Paige — her strengths, challenges, personality, learning style, sensory needs, communication, anxiety, hearing loss, autism, Down syndrome — and for one of the first times in a long time, I didn’t feel the need to over-explain. They understood.
Gary and I toured the school alongside her BCBA. Then Paige toured on her own — asking me to stay behind in the office while she explored independently. Later, she was invited back for a shadow day. Her RBT of five years, Brianna, joined her.
I prayed Paige would feel comfortable enough to show them who she really is.
And she did.
Afterward, Brianna shared details that brought tears to my eyes:
Her shoulders stayed relaxed the entire day. “That is the most comfortable I have ever seen her in a novel environment.”
She confidently walked the halls without constantly seeking reassurance.
She openly talked with teachers and peers — something that does not come easily for her.
She participated in class. Asked questions. Engaged.
The students intentionally introduced themselves and included her.
The teachers clearly saw each child with both compassion and high expectations: You can do this, and we will help you.
The school incorporates movement breaks between classes, sensory supports throughout the day, and an environment where kids are allowed to exist as they are while still being encouraged to grow.
What a gift.
Independence Academy serves students in grades 3–12 and is specifically designed for students with autism. With a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio, they are able to provide individualized academic support while also helping students build confidence, social-emotional skills, self-advocacy, independence, and meaningful relationships.
Paige absolutely loved the school and is eager to attend. We truly believe this environment could be life-changing for her — a place where she can be supported, challenged, understood, and celebrated for exactly who she is.
Even with the voucher program, tuition will still cost our family approximately $13,000 per year. We are committed to working hard and doing whatever we can to make this opportunity possible for Paige.
Most of all, we would appreciate your prayers — for Paige, for our family, and for the staff and students at Independence Academy.
And if you feel led to help support Paige’s education financially, we would be deeply grateful. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps move us closer to giving her access to an environment where she can truly thrive.
Thank you for loving our girl so well.
